Springfield, Massachusetts

Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal are familiar names. In fact, they are immortalized in some people’s heart for one reason, basketball. And this game that has written a lot of pages in our history, that has provided the world with millions of stories, began as a simple idea. An idea that was first conceived in a city perfectly nicknamed as “The City of Firsts”, Springfield, Massachusetts.

Aside from the invention of basketball, other Springfield facts include it being widely known as the land that bore of a writer with a magical hand that brought happiness to children’s lives bearing the name Theodore Seuss Geisel, a name not as familiar as his pen name, Dr. Seuss, for being the creator of over sixty children’s books and producing award winning documentaries. We have a very colorful past because of the books that Dr. Seuss created but what about the past of Dr. Seuss’s birthplace, is it just as colorful?

The City of Springfield began as a mere settler’s expedition in 1636 through different Native American tribes such as the Pocomtucs and the Nipmucks. A village named Agawam was then located and a house was constructed near the village by the Westfield River. The settlement was first named the Agawam Plantation but was later renamed Springfield after a village near the hometown of the expedition’s leader, Pynchon.

Nineteen scores into the future of the Agawam Plantation reveal a city rich in various Springfield companies. A home is bare and lifeless? A company in E Adams Street and Montvale Drive are very eager to provide furniture for one’s living area or sleeping quarters. Someone has a special occasion? Valentines, birthdays, or even a simple “I miss you” can be bought at a building right by Raleigh Road. An individual needs to quench his or her thirst for knowledge or leisure? 8th Street is more than happy to provide a luxury of books to soothe each and every person’s hunger for knowledge or fantasy. Yes, the Springfield yellow pages are packed with an assortment of companies for focused on business and leisure activities for every unique person’s reverie. But is it enough for him or her to last for an adventure of a lifetime?

A Springfield travel guide would be more than enough to answer that question. Because the Springfield Armory National Historic Site gives a person enough awe to last him a dozen lifetimes. Two and a half centuries ago George Washington established one of the major weapons and ammunitions depots of their time known as the National Armory. This armory played a major role in shifting American history and development during its period. As a result, the place it once laid has become an area to promote various Springfield, Massachusetts local businesses.

What else does Springfield have to offer? Details in a Springfield city guide would include the armory, Dr. Seuss, and the invention of basketball. But what it does not include is the memories each person stores because of these historic events. Not only does it influence the people to appreciate more of Springfield, it also lets every person, residents and tourists alike feel the weight of past events changing current lives.
